Cebu Day Trips

The rich culture of the Philippines' oldest city has a wide choice of attractions, whether you're into EcoTourism, nightlife, beachcombing, shopping, or touring religious or historic landmarks.

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

This is where Spanish conquistador Legazpi forted and founded the beginnings of Filipino colonialism. The basilica was where one of Legazpi's soldiers found a small statue of Jesus among the burnt ruins of the city, and proclaimed it a miracle. The statuette was retained and became basis for the Cebuano festival, "Sinulog."

Fort San Pedro

Located on the Pier at Cebu, this old fort was originally built by Spanish explorers in the second generation succeeding Magellan's arrival on the islands. The Fort occupies nearly a quarter mile of area and was erected by a saiilor named Legazpi, for whom many landmarks in this vicinity were given their name. During World War II, the Fort served as a base camp for Japanese operations during the fight for the island's independence. Currently, the Fort stands as a museum, archiving the San Diego shipwreck as well as archeological finds from the Fort San Pedro and WWII eras.

Mactan Shrine

The Mactan Shrine in Lapu Lapu commemorates the courageous warriors and their stand against Ferdinand Magellan. It was the place where Magellan fell to tribal warriors. The shrine features a rich garden, badminton court, a formal shrine with dedication plaques. Nearby, the Manna restaurant serves fresh seafood, hand-picked, market-style, by their dining guests.

Magellan's Cross

Right on Magellanes Street in Cebu, this is the very place where Magellan erected a cross to mark the beginning of Christiandom in the Philippines. Several Filipinos were baptized at this very spot, including the provincial Rajah and Queen.

Taoist Temple

Located in the Beverly Hills area of Cebu City, the Taoist Temple serves as a meditative retreat and Taoist shrine dedicated to the teachings of Lao Tse and the ways of the Tao. Travelers climb the 81 steps to the summit, symbolizing the 81 chapters of the Tao, only to find the Temple at the summit, which offers inscriptions, literature, and related artifacts.
