Philippines : Pearl of the Orient

An archipelago consisting of 7,107 islands, the Philippines stretch out from the south of China to the northern tip of Borneo. The country has over a hundred ethnic groups and a mixture of foreign influences which have molded a unique Filipino culture. Before the Spanish explorers came, Indo-Malays and Chinese merchants had settled here. In 1521 the Spaniards, led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, discovered the islands. The Spanish conquistadors established a colonial government in Cebu in 1565. They transferred the seat of government to Manila in 1571 and proceeded to colonize the country. The Filipinos resisted and engaged in Asia's first nationalist revolution in 1896. On June 12, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent from Spain and proclaimed himself president. After colonializing for 333 years, the Spaniards finally left in 1898 and were replaced by the Americans who continued to colonize the country for another 48 years. The Americans brought over their educational system, their legal system, and their democratic form of government. On July 4, 1946, the Americans finally recognized Philippine independence.

Philippine Tourism invests in Bollywood

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) recently laid out the red carpet for the arrival of executives from the Mumbai cinema industry. The group visited some of the country’s top destinations that may become the backdrop for future productions. Their itinerary included Manila, Subik, Clark, Cebu, Boracay, Palawan, and Bohol. The DOT has further lined up ocular inspections of film studios and other technical resources in Manila and Cebu. Business talks with the FDCP and local counterparts have also been set. The welcoming of these top-level decision makers is part of the DOT’s Film Tourism program, which presents the country’s wealth of visually-captivating beaches, natural landscapes and historical sites as locations for feature movies, short films, TV programs and music videos. (index.php?option=com_content sectionid=5 task=edit cid%5B%5D=45) The Mumbai film trade, more popularly known as Bollywood, churns out an estimated 1,000 movies annually and is one of biggest motion picture industries in the world. The colorful song and dance extravaganzas are viewed by over 23 million Indians everyday. Given such wide reach, the DOT is keen on tapping this market. It has been observed that Bollywood locations soon become trendy and popular destinations among Indian travelers. In the Asian region, both Malaysia and Singapore have used these films to advertise their countries and have since become top holiday choices among Indian nationals.
